In my continued pursuit of artificial intelligence (AI) tools for medical and drug information, I am often identifying new ways to use AI to assist in everyday activities. My newest discovery: AI interview prep. This innovative approach can significantly benefit really anyone, including medical information writers, business leaders, physicians, and pharmacists in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry.
Preparing for AI-Assisted Interview Prep
To begin, you will need:
- The job description
- Your resume
- A list of common or anticipated interview questions (Glassdoor is a good resource)
- The official ChatGPT app for your iPhone
- Access to GPT-4 or GPT-4o (GPT-4 is a paid service from OpenAI and is noted for providing more detailed advice on improving responses. However, GPT-4o, the free model, works similarly well for this purpose.)
Ensure that the memory setting is turned on for this to work correctly.
Initial Prompt
Start by typing an initial prompt into the chat to ensure clarity. Here’s an example:
“In this chat, I would like you to act as an interviewer for a job. I will share with you the job description, my resume, and common interview questions for you to use during the interview in the next prompt. Please use the job description and my resume when providing feedback on my responses. I will then use the hands-free function on the ChatGPT app on my phone to have you ask me interview questions, and I will give an answer. Every time I say ‘ready for an interview question,’ you give me one of the interview questions. To mix it up, feel free to modify the interview questions or create new ones that align with the job description and my resume. After asking the question, listen and document my answer. Please allow up to 20 seconds of silence during my response to ensure my answer is complete before moving on or interrupting. Once my answer is complete, give me feedback on my response and provide examples of more clear and concise answers. From there, you can offer to go on to the next question, or we can try that question again.”
Submit this prompt.
Upload Your Documents
Next, paste or upload the job description, resume, and common interview questions. You should get confirmation from GPT that these were received and the system is ready for your “Ready for an interview question” instruction.
Using Hands-Free Mode
Ensure you are using the app. Click on the headphone image next to the text message box to initiate hands-free mode.
Now say, “Ready for an interview question.” The AI should ask you one of the questions. When done, make sure the app is listening and give your answer.
The AI will then document your answer and provide feedback on your response. Listen to the example response the AI gives and start thinking through how you can use that to verbalize your response. The AI will finish by asking if you want to try again or move on. If you say, “try again,” the AI will ask you the question again, documenting your response, and giving additional feedback. If you say, “move on,” the AI will ask the next question.
Additional Modifications
You can customize the AI’s guidance to suit your needs:
- Response Format: Specify how you would like your responses to be structured (e.g., STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result).
- Interviewer Profile: Provide a profile of who is interviewing you and instruct the AI to interview as a person with that background.
- Focus Areas: Specify particular areas you are trying to improve upon for the AI to focus on in its analysis (e.g., not saying “um,” not talking too fast, avoiding upspeaking, etc.).
Benefits of AI in Interview Preparation
This AI-assisted interview preparation tool has been incredibly beneficial for me. It has helped me to verbalize my experience clearly, gain confidence in my responses, and think critically about how to maximize the impact of my answers. This tool is not just useful for job interviews; it can also be applied to various tasks and endeavors where clear and confident communication is key.
What do you think? How have you used AI to assist in different tasks and endeavors?
